What happens
A Taoist festival where devotees eat vegan food for nine days. Phuket's version is famous for street processions in which entranced mediums pierce their cheeks with skewers and blades. Yellow flags mark vegan food stalls everywhere.
Tip
Processions are intense and loud. Bring earplugs, and wear white if you want to join in.
