Common questions
Do I need to learn Thai to travel in Thailand?
No, but a few words go a long way, especially outside Bangkok and the islands. Hello, thank you, not spicy and how much will cover most days.
What do khrap and kha mean?
They are polite endings with no real meaning of their own. Men say khrap and women say kha at the end of a sentence. Adding one makes almost anything you say more polite.
Why does the same word mean different things?
Thai is tonal, so the same sound said with a different tone can be a different word. Glai with a mid tone means far, and with a falling tone it means near. Use the play button to hear the difference.
